Last weekend, we welcomed the Raleigh and Johnstown units to Philippi. (It's one of the perks of being an East Coast unit, that we get together a few times a year! Just saying...)

Friday evening they were welcomed with a great meal prepared by Renee and Ben--a top secret family recipe! Afterwards, we went to Dairy King for dessert. But before we could leave, Mike discovered a raccoon which had helped itself to our trash in the garage, and consequently was trapped in there with a jar on its head!
So our fearless leaders (the guys that is) planned a course of action which resulted in Matt (from Johnstown) chasing out the raccoon, Mike holding it down with the large push broom and Todd (from Raleigh) helped with the children's snow shovel. Matt then went after the jar with a hammer to break it and get the coon free (at this point we assumed the jar was glass). I don't know that that is exactly how they planned it, but watch the video below to see the results! (Unfortunately the video was taken using the camera and I must have covered the mic partway through. So you can't hear Matt say partway through, "it's not glass, it's plastic!")
After all that excitement, we finally got our ice cream. The rest of the weekend went much less eventfully! Saturday morning we went to Elkins for the Mountain State Forest Festival and watched some lumberjack competitions, jousting (getting little rings on the spear, not other people!), a dog show and of course a parade!

That night we had a bonfire at the farm. Hot dogs, marshmallows, a fire, new friends and a beautiful Fall night!

Sunday after church and the groups left, we went back up to the farm for cider-making with the church. Every Fall Philippi Mennonite gets together to make cider using an old fashioned cider press. We took turns cranking and straining, and we got to bring a couple gallons home. Good stuff!
